Tropic Thunder overcame a spirited challenge from The House Bunny to win the weekend at the box office, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. The action comedy pulled in about $16.1 million -- a drop of only 38% from last weekend, which is very strong by modern standards. The House Bunny also put in a decent performance, and finished the weekend with an estimated $15.1 million, which is just close enough that it still stands an outside chance of topping the chart when final numbers are released on Monday. Death Race finished a little below expectations with $12.3 million, but that was enough for third place, ahead of The Dark Knight, which earned its last weekend over $10 million, this time with an estimated $10.3 million.
The weekend's other wide openers, The Longshots and The Rocker were both also-rans, with $4.3 million and $2.75 million respectively.
