Sales Wrap-Up 2008

Sales Wrap: Sales Wrap-Up 2008: Lil' Wayne Is The "Milli" Dollar Man, Chart Winners & Losers Exposed

Lil' Wayne, T.I. and a few others made big impacts on the charts in 2008. But what of Nelly, Fat Joe and G-Unit? As 2008 nears its completion, SOHH has examined this year's top selling albums along with a few that fell back and missed the big sales payday.

TOP SELLERS

Making his long-delayed return to store shelves on June 10, Lil' Wayne has continued to break records and create a buzz throughout the year, this time with the release of The Carter III.

His hit records "Lollipop," "A Milli," "Got Money," and "Mrs. Officer" helped him land at No. 1 on Billboard's Top 200 and sell over 1 million copies his first week. The record now currently stands at No. 47 with 2,778,800 albums sold.

Another big winner of the year was T.I. Facing an upcoming one year jail sentence beginning next March, T.I.'s Paper Trail landed in consumers' hands September 30.

Despite rap beefs and house arrest, Tip held his own as his sixth solo project debuted at No. 1 selling over 500,000 in its first week and currently rests at No. 30 with 1,389,100 sold copies.

R&B was introduced to a new split personality this year as Beyonce showcased I Am...Sasha Fierce on November 18 offering both a somber side with "If I Were a Boy" and her high-energy side via "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)."

She made headlines with her secret wedding to Jay-Z, and the Grammy winning singer's name gained more attention by debuting at No. 1 with over 482,000 copies sold and stands at No. 3 with 1,052,500 albums sold.

Mariah Carey's E=MC2 made history on April 15 as it went on to become one of her biggest career releases. Gaining additional publicity from her marriage with Nick Cannon, Mariah's first week numbers were 463,000 helping her debut at No. 1 and allowing the album to rest at over 1.2 million copies sold.

Another R&B mega star Usher gave fans a year to remember on May 27 as Here I Stand marked his long-awaited return as "Love in This Club" and "Love in This Club, Part II" began to takeover national radio air waves.

Usher landed atop the charts with 443,000 copies sold and later became a platinum-certified as Here I Stand rests at No. 151 with 1,099,300 scanned units.

British crooner Leona Lewis shocked United States fans as her debut Spirit has remained on the charts ever since it's debut in April. Lowis' first solo project landed atop the charts on her opening week with 205,000 scanned copies and currently sits at No. 59 with 1,330,025 sold copies.

MISSED THE MARK

Despite mega selling albums from Weezy and Mariah, 2008 saw a lot of noteworthy projects that failed to generate heavy sales. Nearly a decade since releasing his last album, hip-hop legend Q-Tip returned on November 4 with The Renaissance led by the tracks "Gettin' Up" and "Move."

Despite a solid hip-hop following, the A Tribe Called Quest frontman debuted at No. 11 selling 34,200 copies. His second solo release currently stands at 79,700 scanned units.

With group member confrontations and pushed back release dates, G-Unit's Terminate On Site (TOS) hit stores on July 1 and was met with mixed reactions. Buzzing from tracks like "Rider Pt. 2" and "I Like the Way She Do It," the group debuted at #4 with 102,000 and currently rests at just under 200,000 scanned copies.

Engaging himself in a brief rap battle with 50 Cent, Fat Joe's Elephant in the Room landed March 11 and was prepped to be the Terror Squad leader's re-start into the mainstream.
Appearing to do fairly well with the success of his J. Holiday assisted "I Won't Tell," the album failed to generate major numbers but did land at No. 6. It opened with 46,000 sold copies but has yet to break 100K sold.

Once known for competing with Eminem's sales numbers, Nelly returned after a four-year hiatus with Brass Knuckles on September 16. The mega-platinum artist's fifth solo project secured #3 with 84,000 first week scanned currently stands at roughly 161,200 sold.

Battling retailers and corporate America, Nas faced major setbacks with Untitled before it hit stores on July 15. He debuted at No.1 as songs like "Hero" helped him push 187,000 copies. Despite the ultra hyped release, Untitled currently rests at a respectable but less than astounding for Nas 407,100 moved.

R&B superstar Janet Jackson made her Island Def Jam debut February 22 with the release of Discipline led by the tracks "Feedback," "Rock with U," and "Luv." Despite her established popularity and landing at No. 1 with 181,000 albums sold, Janet's latest album was unable to outdo former projects, leading to label disputes as Discipline currently remains at just over 415,000.

I’m not exactly sure where this is coming from but Sharabi sent it to me. There are rumors abound that Busta Rhymes has managed to get 50 Cent and The Game on the same record for his album. How? Well, there is a pre-existing song that features 50 Cent. Busta convinced The Game to do a song for a remix of said record. Well, 50 Cent gave his permission to appear on the remix with The Game for the promo value for his own record, Before I Self Destruct. I heard it is going to hit the net really soon. Stay tuned

T.I.

In this week's Sales Wrap, the "King" holds his throne as T.I. stays at No. 1, Jennifer Hudson keeps the spotlight turned on and Ne-Yo keeps it classy within the Top 10.

Once given the title "Jay-Z of the South," T.I continues to remain a top contender as Paper Trail shows no intention of moving from the top spot on this week's charts. According to Nielsen SoundScan, Tip moved an easy 176,700 units from store shelves this week and 746,100 copies overall.

Reality star turned Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson has also impacted the charts heavy this week landing the No. 4 spot selling a solid 62,700 copies of her new self-titled debut. At the end of 14 days in stores, the Chi-town singer's debut has sold 280,392 discs.

Remaining in the charts this week is soft voiced Robin Thicke as Something Else slips out of Top 10 and lands at No. 12 this week selling 38,300 albums. Following-up his platinum selling The Evolution of Robin Thicke, Thicke's latest continues its slow pace with 175,600 copies sold.

Showing no intention of dropping out of the Top 20 before the holidays, Lil' Wayne's Tha Carter III stays put at No. 13 this week selling 27,200 copies. R&B vixen Rihanna also remains within Top 20 after months of being in stores as her re-released Good Girl Gone Bad moves two spots to No. 17 selling a stellar 23,000 albums this week. The newly updated Def Jam release allows the songstress to add a bit more style with her hits "Umbrella" and "Take A Gem." After 71 weeks on the charts, she has pushed 1,891,300 units out of stores.

West Coast's The Game shows he can still hold his own as L.A.X. takes a slight slip to No. 21 with a total of 20,800 albums sold this week. L.A.X, his third album, looks to go gold next week with a total of 496,800 copies currently sold.

Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 10/5/08

The King amongst kings is back. T.I. [click to read] shocks many, not only going gold within one week, but taking the number one spot by a sound margin. Paper Trail [click to read] beat out #2 debut Jennifer Hudson by over 300,000 units, as Atlantic Records' flagship artist reminds fans that while he's not performing quite as strongly as Lil Wayne's first week on the charts, he's well beyond perceived competition Young Jeezy, The Game and Nas, in commercial viability.

As Ne-Yo remained in the Top 10, and Joe debuted there last week, Robin Thicke [click to read] entered the charts at #3. The Interscope singer's Something Else sold well over six figures of units in its premier week. Following that, mainstays in Hip Hop crowded near the bottom of the Top 20. Young Jeezy [click to read] and his Recession [click to read], The Game [click to read] and his LAX [click to read] were split by Lil Wayne [click to read], whose Tha Carter [click to read] took #14, between their respective #12 and #18 positions.

Murs' [click to read] presidential campaign did not lead the Los Angeles rapper to the top. However, Murray found his strongest debut in his career, cracking the Top 50. Murs For President [click to read] entered the charts at #43, making the release Warner Brothers' best Hip Hop showing since Talib Kweli's Ear Drum [click to read]. The release just edged out DJ Khaled's [click to read] We Global. Khaled stayed relatively docile since last week, with many believing that the right single can still propel him near the Top 25 again.

With less than a month on the charts, LL Cool J may soon be leaving the Top 100. The icon emcee's Exit 13 found its place at #88 this past week, at just under 75,000 units sold.

Z-Ro stayed on the charts, holding close rank with the previous week. The Rap-A-Lot Records veteran's Crack may be one of the most overlooked independent releases of the year. T.I., who also found the charts a third time with 4,000-plus units of a specially-made Best Buy greatest hits EP, brought his land full-length back out with him, as T.I. Vs. T.I.P. [click to read] scrapes the bottom of the Top 200, over a year later.

Usher - Trading Places [OFFICIAL VIDEO]

Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 9/28/08

R&B ran things for urban music this past week, just as 2008 saw many weeks before Tha Carter III arrived. In their 25th year, Metallica assumed the top spot again, with their Death Magnetic, selling over 335,000 units in its second work on the charts. Ne-Yo's [click to read] Year of the Gentleman [click to read] held the #3 place with a strong second week in stores. One of Ne-Yo's crooning forefathers, Joe, returned with his newest album, also cracking the Top 10, with a #8 showing

Young Jeezy [click to read] still snuggled his way into the Top 10, with his Recession [click to read] taking the #9 spot, with a chance of going gold this week. The Game [click to read] returned in a major way this week. His LAX [click to read] bypassed recent releases from LL Cool J and Nelly, but still sold just over 6,000 units less than Lil Wayne [click to read], who still remains a force to be reckoned with in his third edition of Tha Carter

Top 200 Album Sales (Top 5 Hip Hop/R&B)

Falling 16 spots in a week, Nelly [click to read] may be showing that he's lost ground as one of Hip Hop's most commercial artists. Brass Knuckles [click to read] cracked 100,000 units in two weeks, but has already given way to tattooed gangsters Nelly's junior. Another warning sign may be evident in DJ Khaled's [click to read] We Global. With projections of a slow and steady performance on the charts, the Miami deejay seems to suffer a bit without packing a monster single in his third album, doubling his rank in a week.

R&B veteran Rapheal Saadiq's critically-acclaimed album The Way I See It [click to read] fell to #41 in its second week.

Hip Hop's big surprise on the charts this week is Houston rapper and ABN affiliate Z-Ro. The Rap-A-Lot Records veteran's Crack proves to be matching Shawty Lo's performance, with the Asylum-distributed album cracking the Top 50, and selling over 10,000 in its debut week. Lastly, B.G. [click to read] and his Chopper City Boyz also entered on the Top 200, with their Life In The Concrete Jungle last week, but unlike Slim Thug and similar artists, have held onto position, staying at #182, selling just over 3,000 units.

BET's Rap City To Be Replaced By The Deal

BET’s Rap City could well be considered one of the quintessential shows for promoting Hip Hop on television. Along with an organic vibe, it gives in-depth interviews and freestyles from the artists we love. Sadly, all great things come to an end.

According to BET.com’s Sound Off blog, Rap City and its two decades of Hip Hop history will be hanging its close sign up. Serving as a platform for well-established rappers and newcomers alike, Rap City made its debut in 1989 with host Chris Thomas (known as “The Mayor”), quickly becoming a must-watch for Hip Hop heads. By 1999, the show changed its name to Rap City: Tha Basement, and with new host Big Tigger, further supplanted itself as a major music source that lasted well into the next decade, with various hosts latching on to bring it new flavor.

However, recent times haven’t looked so great for the BET mainstay. After losing financial sponsorship this year [click to read] and with ratings slowly decreasing, Rap City became a question mark that wasn’t leading to any significant answers. In turn, BET has decided to replace the show in an effort to bring ratings back to a comfortable position.

The show taking its place, The Deal, has been described as a multi-faceted hour-long segment. Hosted by DJ Diamond Kutz, The Deal will begin its tenure on November 10th, following the official finale of Rap City.

Along with artist drop-ins and Hip Hop commentary, one of the main proponents of The Deal will feature a similar scheme to Vh1’s Pop Up Video, which aired from 1996 to 2002. As BET puts it, The Deal will play “the latest and great videos that include pop-up information, facts and quirky tidbits on the artist and/or the song itself,” a description closely resembling Pop Up Video’s “info nuggets.” Rap City’s most symbolic segment, "the booth," will also continue its presence on The Deal.

Hip Hop Album Sales: This Week

In this week’s Sales Wrap Ne-Yo just misses the top spot landing at No. 2, Nelly under a 100k, but nabs No. 3 spot, and DJ Khaled’s latest effort debuts in Top 10.

Bringing R&B back atop the charts this week is Ne-Yo who proves chivalry isn't dead as Year of the Gentleman moves an impressive 250,600 units this week. According to Nielsen Soundscan, the Def Jam singer missed the No. 1 spot for the first time landing at No. 2 on Billboard’s Top 200. The release is led by his VMA nominated hit “Closer” and new single “Miss Independent.”

Making his return to store shelves after a four-year hiatus is Nelly with Brass Knuckles debuting at No. 3 selling a total of 83,715 albums. Following-up his platinum-selling albums Sweat and Suit, the St. Lunatic teamed up with a star-studded line-up including Akon, Jermaine Dupri, Fergie, T.I., LL Cool J, R.Kelly, Ciara, Rick Ross and more.

Trap star rapper Young Jeezy fell four spots to No. 6 this week as The Recession pushed out a solid 59,875 albums. His third Def Jam solo release placed popular producers behind the boards including DJ Toomp, Don Cannon and The Inkredibles who are responsible for his latest single “Vacation.” After three weeks in stores, the album has sold a total of 410,380 units.

Known for popularizing the saying “We Tha Best,” DJ Khaled debuted in the Top 10 this week landing at No. 7 selling 49,570 copies. Believed to be his final Koch Records contractual release, the album We Global features the usual Florida-based line-up including T-Pain, Rick Ross, Plies, Trick Daddy, Pitbull, Flo Rida, Ace Hood plus New York rappers Fat Joe, Busta Rhymes, Nas and Fabolous.

Slipping one spot on this week’s charts is multi-platinum selling rapper Lil’ Wayne who reached No. 9. Following the announcement of his upcoming documentary The Nino Brown Story, Tha Carter III sold a steady 43,110 units with the help of his current hit single “Mrs. Officer” featuring Bobby Valentino. After recently winning the "Best Hip-Hop Video" for “Lollipop” at this year’s VMAs, Weezy’s latest effort has moved 2,453,110 copies in only 15 weeks.

Black Wall Street leader The Game dropped three spots over the week landing at No. 10 with his L.A.X. selling 41,535 copies. Recently featured throughout the Internet with former rap rival Joe Budden, Game’s album offers hip-hop fans a heavy group of varied artists including DMX, Ne-Yo, Common, Ludacris, Keyshia Cole, Bilal and others. His third and final album is headed towards gold status sitting at 418,640 after four weeks on shelves.

R&B vixen Rihanna has fallen two spots to No. 14 as her re-released Good Girl Gone Bad sold 31,680 albums this week. Rihanna’s newly updated version offers fans three additional tracks on top of her smash hits including the Grammy award-winning single “Umbrella” featuring Jay-Z and her latest gem “Take A Bow.” Her third Def Jam release has sold 1,812,031 albums after 68 weeks on the charts.

Returning to store shelves after four years is R&B singer Raphael Saadiq with The Way I See It debuting at No. 19 selling 23,431 copies in its’ first week. The fourth solo album by the musician and vocalist features an interesting guest line-up including Stevie Wonder, Jay-Z and Joss Stone.

British soul singer Leona Lewis, who recently reached platinum, moved up one spot as she continues to sell records with her debut album Spirit moving 22,240 copies this week landing her at No. 21. After 24 weeks in stores, Lewis has sold a total of 1,108,120 units.

Grammy-nominated singer Eric Benet dropped 15 spots as Love & Life landed the No. 26 spot on the charts with 18,541 copies sold. Former husband to movie star Halle Berry, Benet’s new single “You’re The Only One” is reportedly making its way up charts and is his most recent song to hit Top 20 in two years. After 14 days on the charts, the album is stuck at 58,940 units.

Despite excitement about his final Def Jam release being his most anticipated album, LL Cool J has failed to draw in sales as Exit 13 sold a low 14,723 albums this week. Allegedly claiming the label is to blame for the lack of promotion, LL fell 23 spots to arrive at No. 32. His 13th album follows the certified gold 2006 release, Todd Smith, and features appearances from 50 Cent, Lil’ Mo, Wyclef Jean plus the club smash “Baby” featuring The Dream.

Led by lead singer, Travis McCoy, Gym Class Heroes have also suffered a significant loss with The Quilt dropping 24 spots to No. 38 this week selling 12,380 copies. Assisted by production from Cool & Dre, the group’s latest effort showcases guest appearances by Estelle, Busta Rhymes and The Dream. After two weeks on the charts, the group has sold a total of 44,650 albums.

Check back next week to see how newcomer Jazmine Sullivan performs on the charts with her debut album.

Hip Hop Album Sales: This Week

Continuing to show he’s here for the long haul, Young Jeezy stays a top contender in album sales this week as The Recession pushes out an easy 89,940 units. According to the Nielsen Soundscan, Jeezy moved one slot down to No. 2 on this week’s Billboard 200. Going in to his second week on the charts, his new album features a star-studded line-up including Kanye West, Jay-Z and Nas. As of today, the disc has sold a total 350,510 albums.

The West Coast is still alive in Top 10 as The Game slide four spots to No. 7 with his L.A.X. selling 49,240 copies this week. Coming off of the recent success defeating Bow Wow in his much-publicized Madden '09 match-up, Game offers hip-hop fans a steady line-up of varied artists including DMX, Ne-Yo, Common, Ludacris, Keyshia Cole, Bilal and others. His third and final album has sold a total 377,100 copies after just three weeks in stores.

Moving up two spots on this week’s charts is multi-platinum selling rapper Lil’ Wayne who landed the No. 8 spot. Tha Carter III sold an impressive 47,350 units over the past seven days with the help of his current hit single “Mrs. Officer” featuring Bobby Valentino. After recently winning the "Best Hip-Hop Video" for “Lollipop” at this year’s VMAs, Weezy’s latest effort has moved 2,410,000 copies in just 14 weeks.

The most notable release of the week came from Hip-Hop’s “G.O.A.T” LL Cool J as he made his long-awaited return. LL’s Exit 13 debuted at No. 9 this week. Following-up his certified gold 2006 release, Todd Smith, LL Cool J’s final Def Jam release sold 43,646 copies in its opening week. The disc features guest appearances from 50 Cent, Lil’ Mo, Wyclef Jean plus the club smash “Baby” featuring The Dream.

Grammy-nominated singer Eric Benet also debuted this week with his latest release Love & Life reaching the No. 11 spot on the charts with 40,135 units sold. His new single “You’re The Only One” is reportedly making its way up charts and is his most recent song to hit Top 20 in two years.

The newly updated version features three additional tracks on top of her smash hits including the Grammy award-winning single “Umbrella” featuring Jay-Z and her latest gem “Take A Bow.” Her third Def Jam release has sold a remarkable 1,780,360 albums.

Led by lead singer, Travis McCoy, Gym Class Heroes made their long-awaited debut on the charts this week as their new album The Quilt landed at No. 14 with 32,196 copies pushed out of stores. Despite the smash hit “Dangerous” featuring hook slayer Akon, Kardinal Offishall’s new project Not 4 Sale made little buzz as it debuted at No. 40 this week selling 11,870 copies. Kardinal’s fourth studio release features mega hitmakers T-Pain, Sean Paul, Rihanna, Glenn Lewis, The Clipse and many others.

Former NWA rap slayer Ice Cube has dropped to No. 41 as his latest release Raw Footage sold 11,770 albums this week.
