Official: Mercedes' Maybach super luxury brand will die

Daimler has made it (almost) official: It will shut down the superluxury Maybach brand to end almost a decade of losses from an auto that sells for more than $350,000, when a revamped version of the flagship Mercedes-Benz S-Class comes to market in 2013, Bloomberg News reports.

"It would not make sense to develop a successor model," CEO Dieter Zetsche said in remarks confirmed by Daimler spokesman Marc Binder. The coming S-Class is such a superior vehicle, "it can replace the Maybach."

Daimler hasn't made a profit on the Maybach after deciding to reintroduce the 1930s-era marque in 2002, Zetsche said. Mercedes will double variations of the $95,000 S-Class to six as it seeks to boost annual vehicle sales by at least 10,000 a year and step up its challenge to BMW as the world's top luxury-car maker.

BMW and Volkswagen's Audi have grown at more than five times the pace of Mercedes in the past decade by adding new offerings faster. The 125-year-old manufacturer, which has also dropped to third in profitability, lost the luxury-car sales lead to BMW in 2005 and slipped behind Audi this year.

"Mercedes is now also mounting the attack in the high-end segment," Zetsche said in comments to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, to be published today. "We have always dominated this segment, and that should continue to be the case. We don't want to wait until the others pull ahead."

Daimler held internal discussions on "which route promises the greatest possible success in the luxury segment," before concluding that sales prospects were better at Mercedes than at Maybach, the CEO said.

ERICK SERMON SUFFERS HEART ATTACK, 9TH WONDER & RUSSELL SIMMONS REACT

Just days after Heavy D passed away, hip-hop almost endured the loss of another legend. According to DJ Scratch, MC/producer Erick Sermon suffered a heart attack earlier today--though he said Sermon is recovering. "Erick Sermon had a heart attack today," Scratch wrote. "He's ok, but still send your prayers." DJ Scratch was a long-time DJ and producer for seminal hip-hop duo EPMD, which consisted of Sermon and Parrish "PMD" Smith.

Kim Wingate, a close friend of Sermon and owner of justshuddup.com, said that she talked to the rapper. He nearly died. "On the heals of suffering the loss of Heavy D, we almost lost another HipHop Legend last night. Erick Sermon is in the hospital after suffering a heart attack last night. I just got off the phone with E and he said the doctor told him his blood pressure was so high he was minutes from death. He wanted me to let everyone know he's okay." (All Hip Hop)

BUN B WOULD JOIN SLAUGHTERHOUSE, JOE BUDDEN SAYS SOPHOMORE LP NEARLY DONE

"[They're] some of the greatest lyricists we got in the game right now," Bun said ini an interview. "Really having all four of those cats together -- with them and [Shady's Yelawolf] -- they got a mean lineup over there at Shady Records. I respect those dudes, I respect their grind, I respect their hustle, and I respect their talent. If I could get down with a league of gentlemen like that, then I wouldn't be mad at all." JAY-Z'S "OCCUPY ALL STREETS" T-SHIRTS MYSTERIOUSLY DISAPPEAR, DROPPED FROM ROCAWEAR SITE

For Jay-Z, the week started out with acclaim, and ended with a controversial product vanishing from the website of his clothing line. Photos of Jay-Z wearing an "Occupy All Streets" t-shirt were posted on the Rocawear site with close-ups of the shirt and a statement that it was going on sale on Friday. By Saturday morning, the shirts had vanished from the Rocawear site. Tweets from the Rocawear and Roc4Life Twitter accounts published Friday touted the sale of the shirts, but the links to the retail page point to an empty page. (Wall Street Journal)

MMG'S MEEK MILL IS AMPED THAT 'T.I. BACK', "[I'LL] HAVE HIM GET OUT TO THE HOTTEST SONG OF THE YEAR"

If I hold the 'I'ma Boss' remix long enough I might throw Tip on that, have him get out to the hottest song of the year," Meek said in an interview. "He ain't have no problem looking out for me and I don't have no problem doing it for him." In 2008, rumors sprung up that T.I. had signed Meek to his label Grand Hustle, but the co-sign never amounted to an ink stain. Although it's unclear as to why the deal never materialized, Meek says he still salutes the Atlanta giant. "I talked to Tip even when I was with Maybach, he already know my mind frame because me and Tip ended up becoming good friends later on down the line just hanging out with each other." (VIBE)
